Hilux Steering Angle Sensor Defective

My 2004 Toyota Hilux diesel needs more effort to steer, like the power steering failed. It also vibrates/shakes violently with 78304 km on the clock. Could this be alignment? I suspect the steering angle sensor or electronic stability, but what can I check before a shop visit?

Faulty coding of the steering angle sensor after all these years is not unlikely. Does the shaking worsen at a particular speed, and did this begin after any work on the steering column?

The shaking is worse at higher speeds, and no work has been done on the steering column. Could it just be wheel alignment, or is it definitely the sensor? How could faulty coding happen?

Given the speed correlation, it might also be the wheel alignment. Considering your assessment and the age, steering sensor recalibration seems plausible. I would recommend a workshop visit.

You were right! The shop confirmed the steering angle sensor was defective. Recoding fixed it. Total cost including labor: 195€ Thank you for your insight!
