i20 Central Locking Antenna Issue

Hi, I'm having a weird issue with my 2008 Hyundai i20, it's got a gasoline engine. Lately, I've been getting an error stored in the memory and the central locking is acting up – sometimes it just doesn't work! Also, sometimes I can't start the car unless the key is actually in the ignition. A mechanic mentioned something about the bumper antenna since he found some errors in the log. Could this be a vehicle antenna problem? I'm at 182232 km now and never had any trouble with that! Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a central locking issue in a 2008 Hyundai i20, where the system intermittently fails, and the car sometimes requires the key in the ignition to start. A mechanic suggested the problem might be related to the bumper antenna, as errors were found in the vehicle's log. The suggested solution was to check the antenna's cable and plug connection for corrosion or looseness. Ultimately, the issue was resolved by replacing the faulty connection, restoring the car's functionality.

Sounds like a potential antenna issue, especially if you're getting errors and the central locking is flaky. The fact that you need the key in the ignition to start sometimes is also a red flag. Have you checked the cable and plug connection to the antenna itself? Sometimes they get corroded or loose.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not really sure how to get to the cable and plug connection of the antenna in the bumper of my i20. Is it something I can easily check myself, or do I need special tools? I'm trying to figure out if it's a simple fix or if I should just take it to a professional.

Okay, if you're not comfortable poking around with car electrics, it's probably best to get a professional to take a look. Given the symptoms, it does still point towards the antenna cable or connection. Could be a faulty component somewhere along the line. Likely the quickest and safest route is a workshop.

Thanks, I took your advice and brought it in. Turns out the connection was indeed the problem. They replaced it for 95€. Everything's working perfectly now!
