Infiniti EX Random Shutdowns: Engine Code Mystery

Hi everyone, having trouble with my 2011 Infiniti EX Diesel. The engine keeps shutting off unusually, won't start again, and the check engine light is on. Got it scanned and there's a fault code stored. Mechanic mentioned it might be a coding issue. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their EX? Would love to hear how you got it fixed and what the actual problem was. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had some experience with a similar issue on my 2013 Infiniti FX Diesel. The symptoms you described sound exactly like what I dealt with last summer when a third-party performance chip I had installed went bad. Eventually, I took it to my trusted workshop, and they found that the chip was causing conflicts with the ECU. Got it sorted by having them remove the faulty chip and reset the ECU cost me about 180€, but the car's been running perfectly since then. Before jumping to conclusions though, was your EX ever tuned or chipped? Which fault code did they pull? Are there any other modifications on your car?

Thanks for your input! My situation is a bit different though mine is bone stock with 115437 KM on the clock, and the last service was actually done just 2 months ago. Never had any mods or chips installed. The fault code I got was P0340, which I hear might be related to the camshaft position sensor. Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced something similar and could point me in the right direction before I start throwing parts at it.

Hey again! After reading about your P0340 code, I definitely need to correct my initial thought about the coding issue. On my 2013 FX, I actually ran into the exact same code about a year before my chip problem. The camshaft position sensor was indeed the culprit totally different from what I first suggested about coding. The symptoms were identical to what you're describing unusual shutoffs, starting issues, and that annoying check engine light. Mine had about 125,000 KM when it happened. Since your EX is pretty similar to my FX (they share a lot of components), I'm pretty confident you're dealing with the same thing. The good news is that the sensor replacement is relatively straightforward and not too expensive. Cost me around 200€ for the part and labor. Been running smooth as butter since then. My mechanic mentioned these sensors tend to fail on our Infinitis around the 100-120K mark, so your mileage fits right in that window. Sorry for initially steering you towards the coding issue! Sometimes we learn from our own mistakes, right? Let me know if you need any more details about the sensor replacement happy to share what I learned from my experience.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! This is exactly the kind of real-world experience I was hoping to hear about. Really relieved to know it's likely just the camshaft position sensor and not something more serious. The mileage timeline you mentioned makes perfect sense too. I'll go ahead and book it in with my mechanic next week to get the sensor replaced. The 200€ price range sounds way better than what I was imagining when the engine first started acting up! I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and for correcting your initial thought that's what makes these forums so helpful. Will update the thread once it's fixed in case anyone else runs into the same issue with their EX. Thanks again for all the help!
