Mercedes EQV brake fluid warning light and soft pedal

I've got a worry with my Mercedes EQV from 2020 electric engine. It's done 252320 km. Recently, the brake fluid warning light came on, and the brake pedal feels a bit strange, almost like it's giving me less feedback than usual. Could this be related to worn brakes, or should I be looking at something else in the hydraulic brakes system?

The symptoms you describe, coupled with the brake fluid warning light, do suggest a potential issue with your braking system. Given the high mileage, worn brake pads are a likely culprit. As the pads wear, the caliper pistons extend further, requiring more brake fluid and thus lowering the level in the reservoir. It is prudent to also inspect the brake lines for any signs of leakage. Are you experiencing any changes in braking performance or unusual noises during braking?

Thanks for the quick reply! No unusual noises, just the soft brake pedal and the warning light. If it's just worn pads, is a fluid replacement necessary when I get the brakes done, or is it something I should consider separately? Also, how urgent is this? Can I drive it to the shop, or should I get it towed?

The urgency depends on the severity of the issue. A soft brake pedal indicates reduced braking efficiency, posing a safety risk. It is advisable to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician as soon as possible. Driving it to the workshop is acceptable only if you exercise extreme caution and are confident in the vehicle's stopping ability. Towing is the safer option. Regarding fluid replacement, it is generally recommended when replacing brake pads, as the system will be opened. Also old fluid is often contaminated with moisture. The fluid replacement ensures optimal performance of your hydraulic brakes. However, it is best to confirm this with the workshop.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I took it to the workshop. Turns out the front brakes were indeed worn and needed replacing. They did a fluid replacement at the same time. The total cost was 480€. Pedal feels normal again. Appreciate the advice!
