Mercedes ML Battery Issue Resolved
Summary of the thread
The initial issue was diminished battery performance in a 2004 Mercedes ML, characterized by weak starts and flickering lights. Diagnostics indicated a faulty battery sensor as a potential cause. It was suggested to check the battery voltage to confirm if the battery was charging properly, as a healthy battery should read around 12.6 volts when off and 13.7 to 14.7 volts when running. Ultimately, a technician confirmed the defective battery sensor, which was replaced to resolve the issue.

Thanks. Could you elaborate on the battery voltage check? What's an acceptable range, and how do I know if the battery sensor is the problem?

A healthy battery should read around 12.6 volts when the engine is off. When it's running, it should be higher, like 13.7 to 14.7 volts, showing the alternator is charging. If the voltage is off, and the sensor is throwing errors, it's likely the culprit. Honestly, battery maintenance can be tricky, and a bad sensor can throw off the whole system. I'd say take it to a workshop. They can properly test the sensor and the battery.

I had the vehicle inspected by a technician. The battery sensor was defective and needed replacement. The repair was 315€.

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my older BMW. Weak starts and flickering lights usually point to battery problems, but since your diagnostics say sensor, it might be messing with the battery charge. Have you checked the battery voltage? That could give you a clue if it's actually charging properly.
