Mini Countryman Diesel Power Loss and Smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2015 Mini Countryman diesel is experiencing significant power loss and visible smoke during acceleration. The initial inspection suggests a defective diesel particulate filter (DPF) as the likely cause. A faulty DPF can indeed cause these symptoms and may also affect fuel efficiency. It is recommended to check the backpressure sensor readings and consider professional diagnosis to confirm the issue before proceeding with costly repairs.

The backpressure sensor, you say? Where is that located, and what readings should I be looking for? I do mostly city driving, with shorter trips, which I understand isn't ideal for regeneration.

The backpressure sensor is usually mounted on or near the DPF. As for readings, you'd need a diagnostic tool to see live data high backpressure confirms a blockage. Given your driving style, the DPF likely isn't regenerating properly. It might be worth getting a professional diagnosis before replacing it though.

Thank you for the insights. I took it to a workshop, and after diagnosis, the diesel particulate filter was indeed defective. Replacement cost me 1550€. Hopefully, this resolves the issue for good.

I had a similar experience with my Countryman. Reduced power and smoke usually point to DPF issues. Have you checked the backpressure sensor readings? What kind of driving do you typically do mostly short trips?
