Yes, the idle is sometimes rough. I haven't checked the codes yet. If it's the EGR valve, does it need professional attention, or could I do it myself?

Given the symptoms, especially the hissing and rough idle, and potential catalytic converter issues, I'd recommend a workshop visit. A messed up EGR can cause serious problems. It could be other things, so better safe than sorry.

I took it to a mechanic, and it was the EGR valve. The replacement cost 355€. The hissing is gone, the engine runs smoothly, and the power is back. Thanks for the help!

That sounds bad. Hissing and smoke are never good signs. EGR valve problems are common on diesel engines. Does it have a rough idle? It could be a vacuum leak, but the EGR is a prime suspect. Are there any specific error codes?
