V50 Diesel Engine Power Loss

Hey, I'm having some trouble with my 2009 Volvo V50 diesel. The check engine light is on, and the car feels like it's lost a lot of power. Plus, I've noticed some smoke coming out when I accelerate. Mileage is only at 36643 km. Any ideas? Could it be something with the emissions?

Greetings. I encountered a similar issue with my V50. The symptoms you describe strongly suggest a crankcase ventilation problem, or a leak in the ventilation system. Have you considered checking the PCV valve? What does the engine sound like at idle?

Thanks for the quick response! I haven't checked the PCV valve myself yet, to be honest. I'm not super experienced with that sort of thing. At idle, the engine sounds a bit rough, maybe slightly louder than usual. Could a defective crankcase ventilation really cause all these issues?

Affirmative. A malfunctioning crankcase ventilation valve can indeed manifest in the ways you describe. The reduced power and smoke point towards potential issues with the air-fuel mixture, often affected by crankcase pressure. Given the low mileage and the symptoms, I would suggest consulting a qualified workshop for a thorough diagnosis and possible replacement of the crankcase ventilation valve.

Appreciate the help! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on. Turns out the crankcase ventilation valve was indeed defective. Cost me about 360€ to get it sorted, but the car's running much better now. No more smoke or engine light. Thanks again!
