Assistance for diesel particulate filter and reduced engine power in BMW X3 Diesel 2008

Loss of engine power

Hello dear community, I need your support. My BMW X3 Diesel from 2008 with 189,600 km on the odometer is causing me a bit of concern. The check engine light is on, the engine power is significantly reduced, the DPF regeneration seems to be failing, my exhaust smells rather strong and is louder than usual. The last few times at the mechanic have really hit the wallet, so I wanted to ask here if anyone has had similar experiences and could possibly fix their problem more cheaply. I suspect problems with the diesel particulate filter, the message 'Remaining distance low' is also displayed. I would be grateful for any tips!

I get the following message: - Diesel particulate filter information: limited remaining mileage available. - Problem category: Exhaust system. Can you please explain me what it refers to?

Hello Valeentiin, This message typically means that your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is nearing its capacity for storing soot and will soon need to be regenerated or cleaned. The DPF is a component in your vehicle that captures and stores exhaust soot to reduce emissions. Over time, the DPF can become full and will need to be cleaned through a process called regeneration. If you're seeing this message, it's likely that your vehicle will soon initiate this process. If the message persists, it might be a sign that the DPF is not regenerating properly and may need to be manually cleaned or replaced. Please keep us updated on your progress.

Hello Tommylangvatn, Unfortunately, registering a new DPF is not currently possible with Carly. This is a more complex procedure that typically requires specialized BMW diagnostic equipment. I would recommend having this done by a professional mechanic or a BMW service center to ensure it's done correctly. Please keep us updated on your progress.

Hello Steve, The soot level in your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) can be reduced through a process called regeneration. This process burns off the accumulated soot at high temperatures, turning it into ash. There are two types of regeneration: passive and active. Passive regeneration occurs during long drives at steady high speeds, like on a highway. Active regeneration, on the other hand, is controlled by the engine control unit and can occur under various driving conditions. If your vehicle supports it, you could try a forced regeneration process. However, if the soot level doesn't decrease or if you're experiencing other issues like reduced power or increased fuel consumption, I would recommend having the DPF inspected by a professional mechanic. Please keep us updated on your progress.
